First thing you need to do is install and activate the Media File Renamer plugin. Upon activation, simply go to Media » Library.

If your media library is displayed in the grid view, then you will need to switch to the list view.

Switching from grid to list view in WordPress media library

In the list view, you will notice a new column labeled ‘Rename’. This column will show the status of your image, other media file names, and the title.

The plugin will look for file names that do not match the media or image title in the library.

For example if your filename is DSC00132.jpg and the image title is “New year party”, then the plugin will show a rename button next to the file. Clicking on rename button will change the image file name to new-year-party.jpg.

If you don’t want to automatically change image title to new-year-party.jpg, then you can simply edit the image title. As soon as you update the image title, the plugin will rename the file to match the new title.

The plugin will also automatically replace old file name used in your posts/pages with the new file name.

Automatically Update Image File Names When Saving Posts

If you run a multi-author site, then it could be hard to keep an eye on the image filenames.

Media File Renamer also allows you to automatically update image file names to match image title when saving posts. This feature is not enabled by default, but you can easily enable it by visiting Settings » File Renamer page.
